Current MSEM student Hanusha Durisety just completed her final semester at Johns Hopkins. We sat down with her to learn more about her experience participating in international events like the Technion Medical Hackathon and her post-graduation life.

Why did you decide to pursue an MSEM degree?

I had originally intended to get a master’s degree in chemical engineering. However, during my final year, I had the opportunity to engage in organizing national-level conferences and departmental events, which piqued my interest in the business side of things. As I explored this interest further through discussions and research, I realized that my ideal career path would be at the intersection of technical and managerial expertise and people skills. And I found that MSEM was the perfect medium for me to shift into front-end leadership roles that combine technology and management to become a composite engineer who speaks business.

What is your most memorable moment throughout your time in the MSEM program?

Each semester and every course has been special to me as they have helped me develop new set of skills. One of my most memorable experiences, though, is definitely my trip to Israel for the Technion Medical Hackathon, where my team and I won second with our project Facespeak, which is an app designed to gamify treatment for children with cerebral palsy. It gave me the opportunity to work with a very diversified team that included experts with up to 20 years of experience from the software, healthcare, and other industries. Working in such a diverse setting allowed me to witness the impact of the skills I acquired via courses like Innovation and Design and Professional Presentations.

What are your plans after graduation?

The interdisciplinary blend of technical and management courses in the program has steered me towards a career that perfectly intersects the energy sector, data analysis, and product/business skills. Currently, I’m continuing my summer internship at a company that is involved in two of the capstone projects for the current cohort until December. Post-graduation, my aim is to delve into Product Management, leveraging the skills and knowledge I’ve acquired. Ideally, I hope to continue full time with the same company, building on the momentum and learning curve I’ve established during my internship.

Would you recommend the MSEM program to other students who are considering a postgraduate degree? Why?

Yes for sure! The MSEM program is a comprehensive course designed to develop your people management and business skills, crucial for the industry. But yes you do have to brace for a intense project packed first semester. While a bit challenging at first, it’s an enjoyable experience that significantly enhances your ability to prioritize and manage time efficiently. Another highlight for me was the personal connections I formed with the faculty, notably Pam Sheff and Trevor Mackesey, and with my fellow cohort members. These interactions have been instrumental in my personal growth, particularly in enhancing my communication and networking skills. This program not only equips you with technical knowledge but also fosters personal and professional development, making it an invaluable program if you are looking to break into managerial roles.
