MSEM Alum Luisa Blessing (’19) is a senior associate at Grant Thornton specializing in M&A Strategy and Transactions. Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, she now calls Miami home. We caught up with Luisa to learn about how her experience in the Johns Hopkins MS in Engineering Management program prepared her for this role and why she would recommend the program to other students interested in pursuing similar careers.
Why did you pursue an MSEM degree?
While I’ve always appreciated my technical engineering background, I quickly realized during my first consulting project that I lacked essential business skills. I wanted to develop these skills without stepping too far from my technical roots, and the MSEM program offered the perfect balance—combining technical expertise with a strong business focus.
What is your most memorable moment throughout your time in the MSEM program?
My most memorable moments were the international experiences the program offers. Not only did I get to collaborate with classmates from diverse backgrounds, but I also had the chance to work on projects abroad, which allowed me to learn from different work styles and cultures. I had the privilege of traveling to Israel, Spain, and Portugal—each country offering its own unique perspective. These experiences were incredibly enriching and broadened my global outlook.
What is your current role and what do you enjoy most about it?
I currently work as a Senior Associate in Grant Thornton’s consulting/advisory practice, specializing in M&A Strategy and Transactions. What I enjoy most is the uniqueness of each project. Even when working on transactions between companies of similar size in the same industry, every deal presents its own set of challenges and learning opportunities. The constant learning and growth are what I love most about my role.
How do you think the MSEM program prepared you for your career?
The MSEM program is comprehensive, offering valuable learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. The chance to work on real-world projects and apply classroom knowledge was invaluable. For instance, working on process improvement for Johns Hopkins Hospital and conducting market research analysis for the Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) were critical in preparing me for my career in strategy and consulting. These experiences taught me how to manage client expectations, navigate complex requirements, and think strategically under pressure—crucial skills in consulting. The program also emphasized adaptability, effective communication, and stakeholder management, all of which are essential for success in the consulting world.
Why would you recommend the MSEM program to other students who are considering a postgraduate degree?
The diverse opportunities you gain through the MSEM program are truly life changing. You are not only exposed to incredible mentors and professors but also surrounded by brilliant peers who challenge and inspire you. The program provides multiple avenues for skill development—whether through business case competitions, real-world consulting projects, or entrepreneurial and innovation hubs like the Pava Center for Entrepreneurship for you to bring your idea into a reality. Whatever your career goals or aspirations may be, the MSEM program connects you with the right people and resources to support your journey.
