About the JHU MSEM Degree

Every year, top engineering, science and math graduates from all over the globe – from right here in Baltimore to Australia, China, India, Europe and South America – choose to pursue their MSEM degree at JHU’s prestigious, top 20 Whiting School of Engineering.

Why JHU?

Do you see yourself as an innovator?

Managing complex projects?

Do you see yourself starting a company or a social enterprise?

Creating new technology?

Working in Silicon Valley or a top consulting firm?

The JHU Master of Science in Engineering Management is a small cohort-based program designed to create strong networks for life. Our faculty and alums put their contacts to work, developing opportunities for you to build the career you want.

Our flexible, customizable program centers on a 5/5 split between your technical concentration and your management courses, positioning you to innovate technically while building your professional acumen.

The JHU MSEM curriculum includes an immersion experience that takes you into the start-up environment, positioning you for the challenges of entrepreneurship and commercial translation, no matter what field you choose.

Strong Entrepreneurial and Intrapreneurial Focus

The JHU Master of Science in Engineering Management is an ideal program for those who intend to be leaders who shape the future. All of our resources are focused on preparing you to achieve that goal.

Your management courses stress leadership, teamwork, ethics, and innovation in a real-world context. Our mentored internship program encourages you to reflect on your work experience in real time and guides you to improved performance.

In the fall of your first year, you will choose an immersion project – some are abroad, others near JHU – and then over intersession, in a team of 3 – 4 people, you will work intensively with your clients, listening to their problems and researching potential solutions.

MSEM Internship and Co-op Programs

Both these opportunities encourage you to reflect on your work experience in real time and guide you to improved performance. While students are responsible for finding their own positions for both our mentored internship program and the Co-op program, Dr. Bill Smedick, our MSEM Internship Director, and JHU Career Services can help with your search.

Many students take the internship 3 credit course during the summer between the second and third semesters; others find that a co-op experience in the third semester works best for their goals. Incoming students who have arranged for an internship during the summer prior to enrollment may take the course prior to the first semester. While the program does not require the internship course, we strongly encourage it.

Previous MSEM students have interned with The Bahri Group, EDis, JHU School of Medicine, McKinsey, Siemens, SVS Venture Club, Transamerica and Under Armour. JHU MSEM students also travel around the globe working on projects for a variety of corporations and brands.
